Global law firm Eversheds has advised National Grid on contracts with Balfour Beatty and an unincorporated joint venture between Morrison and Skanska, for a £3.1 billion programme of works on National Grid’s gas distribution networks in the UK.
The eight-year contracts include a programme of work to deliver investment in the networks through the replacement of old metal pipes with modern polyethylene pipes together with a number of other key activities. This work forms a core part of National Grid’s Ofgem regulated price control period “RIIO-GD1” running from April 2013 to 2021.
The Eversheds team was led by construction partner David Jones and principal associate Chris Pickens, with support from construction partner Peter Scurlock, procurement partner Ruth Connorton, HR partner Teresa Dolan and pensions partner Stuart Earle. The team advised National Grid on all aspects of the project including construction and engineering, procurement, HR and pensions.
David said:
“This is a highly significant project for National Grid. It is one of the biggest deals signed in the utilities sector in recent years.”
Karen Clayton, National Grid’s UK General Counsel and Company Secretary said:
“We’ve aligned these contracts to start on the same day, and to last for the same term, as our new eight year period of regulation. This will allow us to work closely with our new contractors towards very clear goals.
“We have had great support from Eversheds to enable us to achieve this outcome.”
