PARTNER MOVES - Mario Todino joins Jones Day as competition partner in Brussels

15 Jan 2016

The global law firm Jones Day has announced the arrival of Mario Todino as a partner in the Antitrust & Competition Law Practice in the Firm's Brussels Office. Mr. Todino was previously a partner at Gianni, Origoni, Grippo Cappelli & Partners in Brussels.

Active for more than 20 years in the field of competition law, Mr. Todino offers in-depth experience in mergers, cartels, compliance, state aids, and litigation before the European Union and national courts. He also has significant knowledge of the energy (oil, gas, and electricity), chemical, consumer goods, IT, telecom, semiconductor, automotive, mining, pharmaceutical, medical device, financial services, and transportation industries.

Mr. Todino, in particular, brings invaluable experience from his years in private practice and in government service. As a private practitioner, Mr. Todino has regularly advised leading companies in a broad range of EU and national competition law matters. As a European Commission official, Mr. Todino spent six years in the Merger Directorate of DG COMP as Case Manager, where he was involved in a number of high profile cases. He also served on both the DG COMP Working Group for reform of the EU Merger Regulation in 2004 and for the review of the EU enforcement policy in the field of unilateral conduct (Article 102 TFEU). Mr. Todino also worked at the Italian Competition Authority in Rome, where he was the Deputy Head of the Legal Service and subsequently a member of the Cabinet of the President. He also served at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

Mr. Todino's background in both EU and Italian law will serve to reinforce Jones Day's antitrust capabilities in both its Brussels and Milan offices. He advises, on a regular basis, leading Italian and international companies.

"Mario Todino brings significant value to our competition team, particularly in view of his extensive experience in the private and public sectors. Given his years of government service in Italy and Brussels, as well as at the Court, Mario is a true EU and Italian competition lawyer. Mario's arrival at the Brussels Office continues our ongoing growth across a range of practice areas. In the past few years, we welcomed a new EU health care and life sciences partner, Cristina Spontoni, as well as a new EU regulatory, environmental, and product safety partner, Ursula Schliessner. Within the competition team, other recent arrivals are partners Philipp Werner and Charlotte Breuvart, who respectively offer a particularly strong background in the fields of German and EU competition law and the energy sector," said Bernard Amory, Partner-in-Charge of the Brussels Office.

Antitrust & Competition Law Practice Leader David Wales added, "Mario brings a highly valuable set of skills and a broad legal and practical perspective as a long-standing advisor to leading companies and various government agencies at both the EU and national levels. As a practitioner of EU and Italian competition law, he will bring further depth to Jones Day's global antitrust team."

"Mario's arrival creates an important synergy with our corporate and transactional practices in Italy and further strengthens the array of services and experience that we offer to our institutional clients," added Marco Lombardi, Jones Day's Milan Office Partner-in Charge.

Mr. Todino is a graduate in European Law Studies from the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) (LL.M., with honors) and the University of Naples (J.D., magna cum laude). He is member of the Naples and Brussels bars, and speaks Italian, English, and French. Mr. Todino also is co-author of the best-selling textbook on Italian competition law La disciplina della concorrenza in Italia, edited by "Il Mulino" (2nd ed. 2010).

"In coming to Jones Day, I was very much attracted by the depth and breadth of Jones Day's competition law practice worldwide and in Brussels, as well as Jones Day's One Firm Worldwide culture and the quality of its lawyers and clients. I look forward to this new opportunity and to contributing to the continued success of this outstanding Firm," said Mr. Todino.
