Freshfields advises China Mobile on Deutsche Telekom ‘Connected Car’ joint venture

16 Oct 2014

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has advised China Mobile on the formation of a joint venture with Deutsche Telekom that will bring the cutting edge ‘Connected Car’ software platform to the Chinese market.

The joint venture will utilise Deutsche Telekom’s proprietary telematics technology and China Mobile’s high-quality LTE network infrastructure throughout China.

Freshfields advised on the intellectual property licensing aspects of the joint venture, as well as providing strategic advice during the negotiations in its formation.

Alan Wang, who led the Freshfields team involved with the deal, said that the joint venture offers a strong working model of the possibilities for telecom companies with sophisticated technology seeking to leverage the Chinese market.

Alan commented: ‘This joint venture demonstrates the power of intellectual property licensing agreements and the possibilities for companies with mature technologies that are yet to penetrate the lucrative Chinese market. China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom have built a powerful new player in China’s automotive telematics market for years to come.’

The Freshfields team was led by corporate partner Alan Wang in Beijing and Cologne partner Matthias Koch, head of the firm’s IP and IT practice, with senior associate Chuan Sun.
