Weightmans advises on University deal in Malta

27 Apr 2015

Weightmans has advised Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) on the launch of their new Medical School in the Republic of Malta.

In a multi-disciplinary deal involving expert guidance from the Education, Construction, Corporate, Commercial and Real Estate sectors, Weightmans were able to advise on all legal matters, working with DF Advocates who advised on Maltese law.

Funded initially by the Maltese Government and based on the island of Gozo, the school will provide a teaching programme delivered by staff from QMUL’s Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Corporate Partner, Vincent King who documented the long term operating agreement and lease for the opening of the school said:

“This was an exciting project to work on. There is increasingly a global marketplace for higher education and this is another example of a leading UK university embarking on a significant international project. The launch of the school should not only assist with healthcare development in Malta but also serve as a catalyst for economic regeneration in Gozo, as it forms part of a wider plan to develop the facilities at Gozo General Hospital.”

Professor Richard Trembath, Vice-Principal for Health at Queen Mary University of London said: “Working closely with the Maltese Government, we have developed a programme that sits comfortably with their aspiration to improve medical care to their nation. We will provide a comprehensive high quality opportunity to train for clinical practice anywhere in the world, supplemented by the academic rigour of being associated with one of the top research-led universities teaching medicine.”

Professor Anthony Warrens, Dean for Education, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, said: “The Weightmans team led by Vincent King have simplified this complex process. They were knowledgeable, responsive and above all a pleasure to work with. This is a prestigious opportunity, and we are looking forward to making a major contribution to medical education in Malta. QMUL is committed to supporting the ongoing development of healthcare in the country.”
