Cuatrecasas advises Multitel on the largest telecommunications project in Mexico

14 Nov 2016

Multitel has led the creation process of one of the two consortiums that hope to be awarded the “Red Compartida” project to improve telephone and internet coverage throughout the country

Multitel, owned by Eugenio Galdón, heads an international consortium that has submitted a tender for Red Compartida, the Mexican government’s project to build a cellular network to improve the country’s connectivity.

The consortium is comprised, among others, of Morgan Stanley Infrastructures, International Finance Corporation (Banco Mundial) and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the second-largest pension fund manager in Canada.

Cuatrecasas has advised Multitel and Eugenio Galdón, a strategic partner and driver of the project, on training and structuring the consortium. The transaction, led by the Mexico office, has been conducted on the advice of partners Javier Villasante, Mariano Ucar and Santiago Ferrer, and associate Marta Benjumea.

Red Compartida is the largest telecommunications project in Mexican history. It will involve building a 4G free-access network for all operators. It will be the first telecommunications public-private partnership (PPP) in Mexico, to which the government will allocate a 700 MHz radio frequency band and a couple of optical fiber cables of the backbone network. The investment is valued at $7,000 million. The award of the tender will be announced on November 17.
