CMS advises BT on multi-year channel sharing deal with Sky

08 Jan 2018

International law firm CMS is pleased to have supported longstanding client BT on its multi-year agency deal for BT to market and sell Sky’s NOW TV service to BT TV customers.

Under the deal, BT customers will be able to watch Sky content seamlessly as an integrated part of the BT TV platform. Sky will make the full NOW TV service, which includes access to Sky’s most popular content, including Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, and entertainment channels including Sky Atlantic, available on BT TV’s set top box and BT will also be able to sell subscriptions to NOW TV's passes directly to BT customers.

At the same time, BT has agreed to wholesale its BT Sport channels, which include exclusively live UEFA Champions League and Premier League football, to Sky, allowing Sky to sell these channels directly to Sky satellite customers.

It is expected that these new services will be available to customers from early 2019.

BT Legal’s in-house team was led by Chief Counsel, Media, Matthew Phillips, and closely supported by CMS, led by Partner John Enser. John commented: “As digital and TV markets continue to converge and new players enter the market, we were very pleased to support this landmark deal which demonstrates BT's commitment to remaining at the forefront of the market and to ensuring its customers have the very best access to a wide range of brilliant content.”
