Orrick is pleased to announce that Jennifer Martin, a cybersecurity leader for nearly 20 years in both the private sector and government, has joined the firm as a partner in our Silicon Valley office. Jenny joins Orrick from Covington & Burling, where she led the West Coast cybersecurity practice and was co-chair of its Internet of Things (IoT) initiative.
Jenny becomes Orrick’s 10th partner in a 17-lawyer global core team dedicated to Cyber, Privacy & Data Innovation services.

Jenny brings to Orrick a rich perspective drawing on her experience in private practice, consulting and prosecutorial roles. She served as a Director in Security Intelligence Operations managing the incident response team at security systems provider Symantec, and was a Managing Director at Stroz Friedberg, a leading global cyber forensics firm. She also was among the early specialists in prosecuting cybercrime, both in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Computer Crime and IP Section and later in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, where she set up the office’s computer crime capabilities.
In the public and private sector, Jenny has handled more than 100 data breach incidents and cyber investigations, and regularly advises clients on proactive cyber resiliency across critical issues like incident preparedness, governance and vendor management. She has directed response efforts and investigations into a broad array of sophisticated cybersecurity attacks – including those linked to nation states and with national security implications – for tech, finance and infrastructure clients. The National Law Journal named Jenny a Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Trailblazer in 2016.
Jenny also has been a leading advocate for women in the tech sector through her involvement in various organizations focused on mentoring and educating women and girls in STEM. She served for several years as a professional mentor for the U.S. State Department’s TechWomen program and is a current member of the CalCISO Women in Cyber Advisory Board.
Throughout her career, Jenny has worked on the cutting edge of cybersecurity and privacy issues, and we are thrilled to welcome her to our team, said Aravind Swaminathan, co-leader with Antony Kim of Orrick’s practice group. Jenny’s expertise, combined with her strong network in the business and government cybersecurity communities, will make her a valued adviser to our clients.

Jenny is the fifth addition to Orrick’s global team over the past 18 months, including: Jacqui Hatfield, a regulatory expert named to Innovate Finance’s 2017 Women in Fintech Power List, in London; Barrie VanBrackle, an authority on innovative payments and outside GC to the Merchant Advisory Group, in Washington, D.C.; and Glynna Christian, co-head of Orrick’s Global Technology Transactions practice, who focuses on transactions at the cross-section of innovative data use, such as AI/machine-learning and IP. The firm recently promoted to partner Emily Tabatabai, a Legal 500 rising star in privacy, based in Washington, D.C., and Houston, and Jacob Heath, who advises clients on offensive cybersecurity strategies and has directed the takedown of over a dozen botnets, in coordination with leading industry cybersecurity groups.
Last year, the firm rolled out a GDPR Readiness Assessment Tool considered to be one of the most comprehensive in the law firm industry. Designed to help clients address the sweeping ramifications of the European Union’s new law effective May 2018, this innovation was cited by Law360 as a New Way to Be a Thought Leader in Big Law.
