Bird & Bird wins TMT team of the year at Legal Business Awards

06 Feb 2013

We are pleased to announce that Bird & Bird last night took home the title of TMT team of the year at the 16th annual Legal Business Awards held in London.

The team won for their work helping Nokia to successfully defend a claim that it required a licence to patents owned by IPCom, which sought billions of pounds in royalties. The fight began in 2006 and gave rise to 70 separate actions involving 49 patent families in the largest and longest-running patent litigation in the electronics sector.

Partner and Lead on the Nokia team, Jane Mutimear, said: “The team is delighted to have received this award in recognition of a job well done on a complex, multi-jurisdictional patent dispute.  Although a UK award, our success is down to the work of the whole team from across Germany, Italy and the UK who worked seamlessly together with Nokia on the IPCom cases. ”

Co-Head of Bird & Bird’s International Communications Group Graeme Maguire said: “it’s great to see our team’s work recognised. We are fortunate to work with a wide range of exceptional clients across the full range of IT/technology, media and communications work and the last 12 months were another very strong year for us in these areas.”

The evening was attended by Bird & Bird partners including Jane Mutimear (Lead Partner in the Nokia case) and Graeme Maguire (Head of Comms), along with Richard Vary (Head of Litigation, Nokia) and members of his team.
