PARTNER MOVES - CMS recruits new partner to real estate team

28 Sep 2023

International law firm CMS has announced the appointment of new partner Barry Edgar, a commercial real estate lawyer with extensive experience in advising institutional and private equity clients on investment and development transactions.

He joins the firm’s Real Estate Transactional practice in Scotland after spending many years as a Partner at Dentons in Glasgow. A keen advocate for promoting and utilising technology and innovation within real estate services, Barry has developed a strong reputation in the Scottish marketplace.

Within his new role at CMS, he will continue to deliver new investment and development opportunities for the firm’s highly regarded commercial real estate team, and support clients in meeting current challenges including managing ESG and working requirements.

Commenting on his appointment, Barry Edgar said: “I’m excited to join CMS, a firm with a formidable reputation within the Scottish real estate sector and a strong presence within the private equity market.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues to support clients across a range of key issues including the challenges of evolving their portfolio to accommodate changes in working practices and modern living.”

Paul Carter, head of the CMS Real Estate Team in Scotland, said: “We are delighted to welcome Barry to CMS and to the team. He brings a wealth of experience in the Scottish and UK real estate market and shares our passion for excellent client service, including the utilisation of technology and innovation.

“We look forward to working with Barry as we continue to grow our real estate practice in Scotland and support our clients across the whole real estate market.”

Barry’s appointment is the latest in a series of new hires and promotions over the past few months, as the firm continues to strengthen its real estate offering. Michael Buchanan joined the firm’s Real Estate Transactions team in Manchester in July; Melanie Hughes and Paul Paling joined as partners in the Real Estate Transactions practice in London; Helen Johnson joined as a partner in the Energy, Projects and Construction team in Sheffield; Helen Balliger joined as a Real Estate partner also in Sheffield; David Hardy joined the Sheffield Planning practice; and Sara Keag, Real Estate Disputes and Irfaan Khaliq and Scott Curtis, both Real Estate Transactions, were promoted to partner in the 2023 round of partner promotions.
