International law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP announced that Steven Lorch – a seasoned lawyer in the energy sector – has joined the Firm as a partner in the Tax Department, based in New York. Steven will focus his practice on advising private equity clients on energy-related tax matters.
“Steven is a highly talented practitioner who has an excellent reputation as both a tax lawyer and strategic advisor,” said Weil Executive Partner Barry Wolf. “We are delighted to welcome him to our growing Energy team.”
“Steven is an exceptional lawyer with specialized knowledge of tax incentives that will be critical to our Energy clients,” said Joseph Pari, Co-Chair of Weil’s Tax Department. “His arrival will build on the momentum the Tax Department has generated over the past several years and will significantly deepen our Private Equity Energy offering.”
Steven will advise clients in navigating the numerous tax incentives tied to investments in energy transition, providing additional support to Weil’s Private Equity Energy Initiative, which has already resulted in the addition of four lateral partners in the past year. Since April 2023, notable energy partners Omar Samji, Chris Bennett, Cody Carper, and Irina Tsveklova have joined Weil’s Energy team.
Steven’s energy transition experience includes representations of sponsors and investors, including tax equity investors, tax credit purchasers and syndicators, in solar, wind, hydropower, and energy storage projects, renewable natural gas, renewable fuels, and hydrogen projects, and carbon capture and sequestration projects in the United States, as well as banks and private funds allocating debt financing to these projects. He also advises publicly-held companies and private clients, including private equity sponsors and investors, on the U.S. tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and joint venture transactions in the energy transition, conventional energy, and infrastructure sectors.
Steven joins from Bracewell LLP, where he was a partner in the Tax practice.
“I am very excited to join Weil as the Firm continues to make significant investments in a top-tier Energy practice,” said Steven. “I look forward to collaborating with my outstanding new colleagues and leveraging my experience with energy-related tax incentives to address the evolving needs of our clients.”
