PARTNER MOVES - Simmons names new regulatory head in Hong Kong

10 Jul 2024

International law firm, Simmons & Simmons has announced the appointment of Kenneth Hui as Head of Hong Kong Regulatory, Greater China.

With over fourteen years of experience in the financial services industry, Kenneth's addition marks a strategic enhancement of Simmons' regulation advisory services in the Asia Pacific and Greater China region.

Kenneth's expertise spans a wide range of financial services regulatory issues, including fintech, digital assets, and transaction structuring. His extensive background includes advisory roles for international and regional banks, broker dealers, non-bank lenders, payment companies, financial sponsors, asset managers, and fintech companies.

Based in the firm's Hong Kong office, Kenneth will be working in the firm's growing Asia financial markets practice. He joins Simmons from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he served as counsel in their financial services regulatory group and brings close ties with industry bodies such as the Asia Securities & Industry Financial Markets Association (ASIFMA).

Jason Valoti, partner in Simmons' Financial Markets group in Singapore, says, Kenneth's deep knowledge of financial regulations and emerging technologies will significantly bolster our capabilities in Hong Kong. His expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital assets, particularly within the context of Hong Kong law, positions us to offer unparalleled service and regulatory advice to our clients.

Digital assets are a thriving segment in Hong Kong, a city that has recently introduced a new regulatory regime for digital asset exchanges and is positioning itself as a virtual asset hub. Servicing this market segment, including the development of Simmons' APAC fintech practice, will be a core focus for Kenneth.

Kenneth Hui, comments, Joining Simmons offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the firm's renowned expertise in financial services regulation. I look forward to leveraging my experience to help our clients navigate the complex regulatory landscape and capitalise on the opportunities in the digital assets and fintech sectors, delivering the outstanding quality of service the firm is already known for in Hong Kong and beyond.

This appointment follows the recent announcement that Simmons has now more than doubled the size of its dispute resolution (DR) team in Singapore in the last six months, with the hire of partner Lijun Chui, who specialises in international commercial dispute resolution and investigations in the Asia-Pacific region in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector and financial sector.
