25 Jul 2025

Freshfields announced that John Rousakis has joined the firm’s Corporate practice in New York.

John advises clients on navigating environmental risks and opportunities against the backdrop of a complex regulatory landscape. His practice focuses on representing industrial, energy, transportation and private equity clients, among others, on acquisitions and divestitures, development, real estate and infrastructure projects, and in contaminated site remediation matters. He also provides strategic and regulatory counselling on a range of environmental compliance matters, including the development of sustainability frameworks, programs and policies.

U.S. Managing Partner Sarah Solum stated “We are seeing increased demand from our private capital, tech and infrastructure investor client base for advice evaluating environmental risk on key investments as well as significant activity in the energy sector which requires genuine environmental, climate and regulatory expertise. John’s experience navigating environmental risk for high-profile clients in addition to his background at the New York Department of Environmental Protection, will make him an excellent advisor for our clients.”

John’s practice is focused on transactional advisory work, in particular advising clients on the commercial aspects of environmental risk. He is recognized as a leading U.S. environmental lawyer by Chambers USA and in Legal 500 U.S.

Global Co-Head of Private Capital Neal Reenan noted “John will easily plug into our U.S. corporate, private capital and infrastructure teams to provide immediate value to clients across a range of key growth areas, as well as enhancing our expanding global environmental and sustainability practice. His experience representing some of the most sophisticated clients in the world on a variety of environmental matters and across a range of transactions will augment our existing knowledge in this space globally and provide a compelling offering for our clients.”

John added, “Freshfields has an excellent environmental team that spans the globe, and I’m excited to further expand that in its U.S. offering. The corporate team in the U.S. works on significant deals and I’m happy to add my experience advising clients with environmental needs.”
