PARTNER MOVES - Leading Corporate Partner Joins Squire Sanders in Sydney

22 Jan 2014

Squire Sanders has announced the appointment of corporate and financial services partner Michelle Segaert, who has joined the firm from Sparke Helmore. Ms. Segaert’s appointment follows that of former colleague and financial services partner Tom Lennox, who joined Squire Sanders with a team of lawyers in September 2013.

Ms. Segaert has over 27 years’ experience in funds management, corporate transactional work and financial services regulation. She began her career at the Sydney office of King & Wood Mallesons and she has worked at Linklaters in London. Ms. Segaert also has extensive in-house experience gained from her roles as general counsel at investment bank Carnegie Wylie (now Lazard Carnegie Wylie) and senior corporate counsel at Allco Finance Group Limited.

Ms. Segaert specializes in funds management work across the spectrum of listed, unlisted, registered and unregistered funds and Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) advisory work. She advises on the establishment, management and operations of onshore and offshore fund and investment vehicles, including the investment in property, infrastructure, private equity investments and sustainable investments.

In addition to her funds and licensing expertise, Ms. Segaert has considerable corporate transactional and advisory experience and has advised on takeovers, schemes of arrangement, restructures, acquisitions and disposals of businesses, companies and investments, joint ventures, private equity investments, IPOs, secondary capital raisings, share buy backs and capital reductions.

Campbell Davidson, office managing partner of Squire Sanders in Sydney, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Michelle to the firm. Michelle’s appointment is an important strategic step in expanding our corporate practice in Australia, particularly from the perspective of financial services and fund management.

“Michelle is highly rated and well-known by our financial services team, having worked closely with Tom Lennox at Allco Finance Group, and her particular focus on funds and financial services regulation complements the services we provide clients in this field.”

John Poulsen, Squire Sanders’ managing partner in Australia, said: “Michelle has a wealth of international experience gained from a long career at top-tier law firms, and working in China and the UK. She will be a real asset to international clients looking to set up or manage funds or financial services businesses in Australia and we see significant opportunities to develop our practice in this regard, in particular servicing clients from Hong Kong and mainland China.”
