Macfarlanes advises The Economist on Bazian Limited acquisition

The Economist Newspaper Limited has turned to Macfarlanes for advice on its acquisition of healthcare intelligence business Bazian Limited.

The team was led by corporate partner James Dawson, with support from lawyers in tax, employment, and IP.  James Dawson comments: "We are very pleased to have completed our first deal for The Economist in helping them to expand in the healthcare intelligence sector."

£70m Truphone Investment

Simmons & Simmons has advised Truphone, the international mobile telecoms company, on a £70m investment in the company by Roman Abramovich. The funds will be used to increase headcount by around 500 in the next 18 months, continue its innovative product development programme and finance the opening of businesses in the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Poland, Germany and Spain.

Norton Rose advises UBM on £160m data services disposal

The London office of leading international legal practice Norton Rose has advised UBM plc on the £160 million proposed disposal of certain parts of its data services business to Electra Private Equity Partners.

UBM’s proposed disposal of its data services business consists of five divisions: Aviation, Global Trade, Medica, RISI and Tech Insights.

The disposal involves the sale of 70 companies in 44 jurisdictions and asset sales in the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

SJ Berwin advises Universal Music Group on the sale of Parlophone Label Group to Warner Music Group

Leading international law firm SJ Berwin has advised Universal Music Group (UMG) on its sale of Parlophone Label Group to Warner Music Group for £487 million.

The sale follows the approval of UMG’s £1.2 billion acquisition of EMI Recorded Music by the European Commission in September 2012, on which SJ Berwin also advised UMG.

Bird & Bird wins TMT team of the year at Legal Business Awards

We are pleased to announce that Bird & Bird last night took home the title of TMT team of the year at the 16th annual Legal Business Awards held in London.

The team won for their work helping Nokia to successfully defend a claim that it required a licence to patents owned by IPCom, which sought billions of pounds in royalties. The fight began in 2006 and gave rise to 70 separate actions involving 49 patent families in the largest and longest-running patent litigation in the electronics sector.

Based in London, Harrogate and Leeds, IDH is a search engine optimisation and digital marketing specialist. NetConstruct provides enterprise level websites and e-commerce stores for business-to-business and business-to-consumer application to mobile, video, online training and systems integration.

Hogan Lovells Advises Liberty Global on £15 bn Virgin Media Acquisition

Hogan Lovells advised Liberty Global on the European competition, pensions and employee share plan aspects of its £15 billion acquisition of Virgin Media, announced today, Wednesday 6 February. The transaction is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

Liberty Global is a leading international cable operator with operations in 13 countries, including 11 in Europe. The acquisition will make it the world's largest broadband company, with 25 million customers in 14 countries.
