Ashurst advised DP World on a 30 year concession agreement, with an automatic 10 year extension, with the Government of the Republic of Somaliland to develop, operate, manage and maintain the terminal facilities at the port of Berbera in Somaliland. The recent win of the port concession, which was signed on 5 September 2016, adds to DP World's portfolio of over 75 terminals.
DP World, one of the largest port operators globally and the Government of the Republic of Somaliland will set up a joint venture which will develop the current port of Berbera during an initial phase to extend the quay and yard. The joint venture will then oversee the operation and management of the extended port and will potentially expand the port further in later phases.
The port of Berbera is Somaliland's only container and cargo port and is a crucial point for trade for Somaliland and surrounding east African countries, such as landlocked Ethiopia.
Ashurst partner David Charlier, who led the Ashurst team, comments:

David was assisted by partner Joss Dare and associates Grant Batten, Jennifer Moore and Raquel Tarancon Plata.
