Charles Russell advises on Renewable Energy projects

31 Jan 2013

Charles Russell is proud to have advised the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) on two ground breaking new assignments.

The ETI has signed a £15.5m project Isle of Wight-based Blade Dynamics who will develop what are expected to be the world's longest turbine blades ever built. As part of the project, the ETI will take an equity holding in the company. Blade Dynamics will construct the blades of between 80 metres and 100 metres in length, incorporating carbon fibre rather than conventional fibre glass. Turbines utilising blades of this length would be capable of producing up to 10 megawatts, which compares with the 5-6 megawatt capacity turbines currently deployed offshore. The ETI has licensed a national asset database, which details the UK's offshore carbon dioxide storage capacity. The web-enabled database - the first of its type anywhere in the world - will assist stakeholders to make informed decisions relating to the roll out of carbon capture and storage in the UK. The licence has been granted to The Crown Estate and the British Geological Survey, who will host the database and undertake further development. To read more about the database, please click here:

Jennifer Pierce, Mark Moncreiffe, Christopher Birch and Adam Fotheringham supported the ETI in these projects.

In addition to these cutting edge projects, the Charles Russell team are proud to have previously assisted the ETI in drafting some of its initial documentation in other technology projects such as the development of a test rig able to re-create the dynamic conditions that affect wind turbines when installed offshore.

The ETI is a public-private partnership between global energy and engineering companies - BP, Caterpillar, EDF, E.ON, Rolls-Royce and Shell - and the UK Government. http://www.eti.co.uk/
