Clifford Chance has advised Horizon Nuclear Power Wylfa Limited in achieving the first step towards obtaining development consent for its new Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Generating Station on the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales.
The Planning Inspectorate has announced that it has accepted Horizon Nuclear Power Wylfa Limited's application for development consent to build and operate the Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Power Station. The Project will be one of the UK's largest energy infrastructure projects and an important step towards achieving the Government's commitment of transitioning to a low carbon economy. The Project will also create significant long-term employment opportunities and economic benefits for Anglesey and North Wales.
Clifford Chance has advised on multiple aspects of the Project, including preparation of the application and environmental impact assessment, land acquisition, statutory consultation and related planning applications. This acceptance decision confirms that the application for development consent has met the statutory requirements necessary to proceed to public examination and determination by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The development consent order is anticipated to be granted towards then end of 2019.
Jon Cornelius, Senior Principal Solicitor at Horizon said: “Clifford Chance’s expertise, knowledge and guidance has been a crucial factor in helping us get to Acceptance. A DCO submission is a major undertaking and Nigel and his team have played an important role alongside Horizon in its successful delivery to this point. I’m sure they will play an equally integral part as the DCO continues to progress.”
Commenting on the Project, lead Partner Nigel Howorth said:
