Clyde & Co has been engaged by the Guinean government to advise on the high profile Simandou South iron ore mining project. The Guinean government is developing Simandou South in partnership with Rio Tinto, Chalco and the International Finance Corporation – a member of the World Bank.

The $20 billion Simandou South project is one of the world’s largest untapped high quality iron ore deposits, located in the south east of Guinea, and the project includes the construction of a 700km railway and the development of a deep water port to the south of Conakry, Guinea’s capital. Once developed it is set to be the largest integrated iron ore mine and infrastructure project ever developed in Africa and it offers the potential to transform the development of Guinea’s economy and transport infrastructure.

Philip Rogers, Head of Corporate at Clyde & Co and lead partner on this project, said: "We are delighted to have been appointed as advisors on this hugely important project for the Government and people of Guinea. We were selected by the Guinean government based on our proven expertise following a competitive tendering process. In common with our general approach, we will provide highly specialist yet practical advice which we believe will best ensure the success of the project in the interests of all parties concerned, not least the people of Guinea."

In addition to the intrinsic complexity of the project, the transaction is to be negotiated and documented in French as well as in English. All members of the core Clyde team based in London and the Middle East are bilingual in French.

Clyde & Co has a long heritage in supporting integrated natural resource projects, particularly in Africa. Clyde & Co has advised on a number of mining and infrastructure projects including the Tonkilli project in Sierra Leone.
