Dentons advises the England and Wales Cricket Board on its new partnership with News UK for cricket clip rights

01 May 2014

Dentons has advised its longstanding client the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on its partnership with News UK for the exploitation of its clips rights and News UK's role as "Official Media Partner of the ECB".

Dentons has advised the ECB on its broadcasting rights deals throughout the world over a number of years but this deal is particularly significant as it is the first of its kind for the ECB. The agreement follows hot on the heels of similar deals announced by News UK with the Premier League and Premier Rugby in recent months. The ECB and Dentons worked together to negotiate a deal which will allow cricket fans who subscribe to certain News UK services to access clip highlights of the cricket on the internet and via their mobile device.

"This was a complex arrangement which will enable News UK to exploit the clips rights on a global basis, but without derogating from the ECB's pre-existing agreements with various broadcasters worldwide," said Adrian Barr-Smith, Consultant in Dentons' TMT team.

John Perera, Commercial Director at the ECB, added: "We were advised by Dentons on this complex deal and were pleased with their ability to understand the issues that we faced to deliver a very satisfactory conclusion - the first time that the ECB has been able to financially exploit its digital rights."

The Dentons team was led by Adrian Barr-Smith and included Alex Henderson.

News UK was advised by Wiggin.
