Eversheds advises on financing for African hospital

03 Jul 2013

Global law firm Eversheds has advised the International Finance Corporation on a $37m hospital PPP for the Cross River State Government, Nigeria. The project has now reached financial close.

The project comprises the design, construction, equipping and operation of a 105 bed referral hospital in Calabar. An operational contract was awarded to UCL Healthcare Services following a lengthy procurement process.

The Eversheds team was led by Partner Richard Birks, assisted by Principal Associate Sophie Robinson, who are part of Eversheds’ international infrastructure team. They worked alongside Partner Oghogho Makinde and Senior Associate Uche Ugoji from Nigerian based law Firm Aluko & Oyebode.

Richard Birks commented:

“Eversheds has strong links with Africa; the firm’s Africa Group has in excess of 40 lawyers who work to deliver services to multinational clients across the continent. This expertise has enabled us, working closely with Aluko & Oyebode, to seamlessly advise IFC in bringing this important project to a close. This hospital will offer a comprehensive package of secondary health care services and specialist care provided by skilled physicians, something which is needed in the region.

“We strongly believe that this project will make a real difference to the local communities and provide a boost to Nigeria’s already strong infrastructure market. We are already looking forward to working with IFC further in advising Ekiti State on a similar PPP project.”
