Herbert Smith Freehills advises Amcor on acquisition of Indian packaging company

17 Jul 2015

Herbert Smith Freehills' Singapore office has advised Amcor Limited on its acquisition of Packaging India Private Limited (PIPL), a flexible packaging company, from Indian listed company Essel Propack.

PIPL provides packaging for large Indian and international consumer goods companies, such as P&G, Unilever, Cadbury, General Mills, Henkel and Wrigley.

Amcor is a global leader in responsible packaging solutions for the food, beverage, healthcare, home and personal care, and tobacco packaging industries. It has over 180 sites in 43 countries, and more than 26,000 employees.

"We're delighted to have assisted Amcor on this latest expansion of its global business," said Singapore corporate partner Nicola Yeomans. "Herbert Smith Freehills has worked on a number of transactions in new territories for Amcor in recent years and are pleased to have assisted in this latest acquisition."

"This acquisition reflects the rapid sophistication of the consumer goods market in Asia, and is typical of the types of transactions on which we are advising in this region."

Nicola was assisted by Singapore associate Indraneil Ghosh and worked with Indian law firm AZB & Partners in Bangalore and Chennai.

Chris Parsons, Chair of Herbert Smith Freehills' India Practice, also commented on Amcor's successful acquisition, "Transactions like this demonstrate the strength and versatility of our 66-partner India practice in assisting international organisations to build an operational presence in India. The Indian market is developing rapidly, and our longstanding experience of the country is critical in completing transactions of this kind successfully."
