King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin has advised a consortium of investors on the acquisition of the gas-fired Severn power station from Danish state-owned energy group DONG Energy.
Severn power station is situated at Uskmouth near Newport in South Wales and generates electricity for the British national grid. It has a capacity of 832MW and is able to generate power for approximately 1.5 million British households, and it is one of the most efficient natural gas-fired power stations of its type in the UK.
The acquisition supports the investors' strategy of acquiring good value power generation assets in a market which is increasingly looking to be short of power into the future. This is the third deal that the King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin team has led on for the group following the acquisition of Baglan Bay power station from General Electric Co. in October 2012 and Sutton Bridge facility in eastern England from Electricite de France (EDF) in December 2012.
The King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin team was led by Steven Davis, Corporate partner and senior associate Peter Workman with Energy & Infrastructure partners Neil Upton and Rinku Bhadoria who advised on industry, financing and commercial aspects. EU, Competition & Regulatory partner, Elaine Gibson-Bolton, led on the European aspects of the deal.
Neil Upton, co-head of Energy & Infrastructure at King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin, said: "We had a great team and the consortium really knows how to appraise and deliver a good deal. We are delighted to be able to work so closely with them on another successful acquisition."
