Linklaters plays key role for large London buildings

21 Mar 2013

Analysis of data on single asset deals in Central London for 2012 reveals that Linklaters acted on half of the top ten Central London deals by value, including the two largest. (source: Jones Lang Lasalle).

“London’s attractiveness for global capital was the key to both of the largest deals”, says Patrick Plant, lead partner on the biggest of the deals – the acquisition of Plantation Place for an overseas investor. “London contains a liquid pool of substantial quality assets, enabling major global investors to put significant amounts of capital to work”.

“Debt pressures continue to force opportunities to the market” adds Mark Burgess-Smith, the partner responsible for the second-biggest single asset deal -- the sale of Battersea Power Station to Malaysian buyers -- after two years of debt restructuring initiatives by insolvency colleagues.

“Battersea was exceptional, in that the owner was in administration.  So Plantation Place was probably more typical of current market conditions, with a requirement to refinance securitised debt providing the impetus”.
