28 Nov 2014

Norton Rose Fulbright has advised Howden Broking Group, a subsidiary of Hyperion Insurance Group, on the acquisition of a majority stake in German insurance distribution group Schouten Sicherheit International (SSI), part of Schouten Zekerheid. SSI was founded in 1990 by former national hockey player Peter Caninenberg and is best known for its work in the fields of Sports, Movies and Special Risks. Other divisions of SSI include Real Estate as well as Industry & Commerce. The group with two broking operations, two managing general agencies and a marketing company, has 70 employees in five offices in Germany. The transaction is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities.

With this acquisition, Hyperion further expands its presence in Germany: Together with Dual Deutschland and Hendricks, a broker well-known especially for its D&O business, Hyperion is now one of the largest independent brokers in the country.

The Norton Rose Fulbright Team involved was led by Munich insurance partner Eva-Maria Barbosa. Other partners involved were: Andreas Börner (corporate/insurance, Munich), Katrin Scheicht (employment, Munich), Ep Hannema (corporate, Amsterdam).

Of counsels and associates working on this deal were: Sebastian Frech, Raphael Suh, Sandra Weyrich (all corporate, Munich), Matthias Nordmann (antitrust & competition, Munich) and Joke Everts (Corporate, Amsterdam).
