Norton Rose Fulbright advises on new nuclear plant at Wylfa Newydd, Wales

02 Jun 2016

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe, Ltd. in relation to its role in the newly created joint venture responsible for construction of Horizon Nuclear Power’s 2,700MW nuclear plant at Wylfa Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey, Wales.

On 20 May 2016, Horizon Wylfa Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., appointed “Menter Newydd”, a specially created unincorporated joint venture, to help deliver the company’s lead nuclear new build project, Wylfa Newydd.

Menter Newydd, meaning New Venture in Welsh, is a joint venture of Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe, Ltd., Bechtel Management Company Limited, and JGC Corporation (UK) Limited and will be responsible for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction of Wylfa Newydd, overseen by Horizon Nuclear Power.
Peter Hall, partner, comments:

“It is clear from recent UK Government statements that nuclear new build has a key role to play in securing a low carbon and sustainable energy mix going forward.  We are delighted to have played our part in meeting that objective by helping to build the growing momentum behind the Wylfa Newydd project.

“It has been a privilege working with Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe and the wider Menter Newydd team. The quality and breadth of their nuclear experience combined with our own from a legal perspective meant that we were able to conclude this phase of a large and complex infrastructure project in a timely way and help keep the project on track.”

The Norton Rose Fulbright team, led by head of nuclear services, Peter Hall, advised Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe, Ltd. on the joint venture arrangements with Bechtel Management Company Limited and JGC Corporation (UK) Limited, on the appointment by Horizon Nuclear Power Limited and Menter Newydd’s initial subcontracting arrangements.
