PARTNER MOVES - Addleshaw Goddard's associated Hong Kong Law Firm adds third partner and changes name to Francis & Co.

24 Dec 2013

Addleshaw Goddard is increasing the breadth of its capability in Hong Kong following the appointment of a third partner in its associated local law firm. Daniel Wan specialises in Equity Capital Markets work as well as having an active M+A and general corporate practice and has previously worked in Jun He Law Offices and Herbert Smith Freehills.

In the last month, Stewien & Co., Addleshaw Goddard's associated Hong Kong law firm, changed its name to Francis & Co, following the arrival of Nigel Francis, the former Head of Litigation and Employment at Minter Ellison.

The team has also re-located to new premises on the 8th floor of the prestigious Citibank Tower in the heart of Hong Kong's business district as part of plans which will see the office number grow to more than 12 full-time lawyers by the end of the calendar year.

Addleshaw Goddard was given clearance in August 2013, to add Hong Kong to its network of overseas offices in Dubai, Oman, Qatar and Singapore. It's presence in Greater China is led by Nigel Francis and Corporate partners Brett Stewien and Daniel Wan.

Andrew Carpenter, Addleshaw Goddard International Division Managing Partner said: "Nigel is very well known in the local market and it was always the intention that the practice would adopt his name once the various regulatory requirements were completed. Daniel is similarly well known in Hong Kong and the PRC for his Corporate Finance practice which has continued to thrive even in difficult markets."

"The combination of Nigel, Brett and Daniel in Hong Kong and Jamie Harrison in Singapore is opening up new markets in Greater China for us. The combination of that platform with our capability in the GCC, and increasing focus on Africa, Korea, Japan and Malaysia, is an exciting proposition and we are very encouraged by the early opportunities flowing from our investment and increasing capability."

In the current calendar year, Addleshaw Goddard has made 11 international lateral partner hires across its offices in Dubai, Oman, Qatar and Hong Kong to increase its speciality capabilities in corporate, construction, litigation, banking and private equity.

Hong Kong qualified Daniel Wan specialises in corporate finance, IPOs, pre-IPO investments and restructurings and well as post IPO-regulatory and compliance matters, and secondary equity fundraisings. His experience also includes M&A, takeovers, JVs, restructurings and direct investments in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Daniel's clients include investment banks, investment funds, private and listed companies.

Daniel brings with him two associates - Simon Wong and Yen Yum - and the trio will combine with fellow Corporate partner Brett Stewien, who specialises in cross border M&A, investment and other corporate transactions, and has experience leading assignments across Asia, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Addleshaw Goddard's Hong Kong capability services the increasing number of clients who are looking to do business in Hong Kong and in the PRC with a focus on contentious, employment, regulatory and corporate matters.

It assist clients over a full range of litigation, corporate and commercial issues, including international arbitration, financial regulatory advice, foreign direct investment, commercial contracts and employment (contentious and non-contentious) as well as corporate finance, Hong Kong IPOs, pre-IPO investments and restructurings, post-IPO regulatory and compliance matters, and secondary equity fundraisings as well as mainstream cross-border experience of M&A, joint ventures, divestments, investments and commercial transactions in Hong Kong and Mainland China and further afield across Asia.

Addleshaw Goddard is able to provide clients with specialist lawyers with experience handling cross border M&A and joint venture activity across Asia and who are able to speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese with significant experience with respect to Chinese and Hong Kong matters.
