PARTNER MOVES - Alston & Bird adds former FTC official Alexis Gilman

21 Aug 2025

Alston & Bird announced that Alexis Gilman, the former head of the Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Competition unit responsible for reviewing mergers and acquisitions in industries such as health care, retail, and consumer products, has joined the firm’s Antitrust Team as a partner in Washington, D.C.

“Alexis joins us as a leading antitrust advisor to health care providers and other health care organizations as well as retailers and technology companies. He has a proven track record of obtaining merger clearances and resolving government antitrust investigations,” said John Snyder, co-leader of Alston & Bird’s Antitrust Team and a former official at the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. “His deep understanding of the arguments that resonate with enforcers will further strengthen our ability to guide clients through an evolving matrix of legal risks in D.C. and beyond.”

Alexis brings more than two decades of antitrust experience, including seven years at the FTC, where he served as assistant director of the Mergers IV Division from 2014 to 2017. Most recently, he was a partner at a U.S.-based international law firm. His practice spans a wide range of industries, including health care, retail, consumer goods, food and beverage, veterinary, distribution, technology, and casino/gaming.

“I’m drawn to the depth and breadth of Alston & Bird’s platform, which includes formidable capabilities in the health care and food and beverage industries in particular, including M&A, regulatory, litigation, and public policy,” said Alexis. “There’s real synergy across these and other practices, which creates a great fit between my growing practice and this top-tier firm and D.C. antitrust team.”

Alexis advises clients on a broad spectrum of antitrust and competition matters, including antitrust diligence and deal negotiations, merger reviews and clearances, government investigations, Hart–Scott–Rodino Act and foreign merger notifications, civil contract matters, general antitrust compliance, trade association counseling, and antitrust litigation.

Alston & Bird’s antitrust attorneys regularly represent leading national and international companies in mergers and acquisitions, government investigations, and antitrust litigation—including class actions and multidistrict litigation—to help clients achieve their business goals in the United States, Europe, and globally. With experienced former FTC and DOJ antitrust officials, the firm’s growing Washington, D.C. office and Chambers-ranked antitrust practice are well-positioned to steer strategic transactions through the regulatory process.
