PARTNER MOVES - Baker Botts strengthens antitrust practice with top DOJ litigator

23 Jan 2025

Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology, and life sciences law firm, announced that prominent litigator Edward Duffy has joined the firm’s Litigation Department as an Antitrust partner in the Washington D.C. office.

Duffy brings a wealth of experience from his role as Senior Litigation Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. His expertise includes leading landmark cases on behalf of the DOJ and advising on complex antitrust matters across various industries—including airlines, financial services, power generation, oilfield services, travel management, shipping, and agriculture. Notably, he served as lead trial counsel in the DOJ’s challenge to the JetBlue-Spirit merger, securing an injunction against the merger in federal court—one of the largest mergers blocked by the current administration. Duffy was lead counsel in the DOJ's monopolization case against Visa.

Duffy also served as Acting Assistant Chief of the Transportation, Energy & Agriculture section of the DOJ Antitrust Division, where he oversaw a team of 35 attorneys and paralegals in civil enforcement and merger review. Prior to his government service, Duffy was a partner at a global firm, handling antitrust litigation, civil trials, criminal investigations, and antitrust counseling.

“Ed is in the strategic bullseye of our standout global Antitrust practice,” said Danny David, Managing Partner. “His extensive experience in government-related litigation will greatly complement our elite team’s industry-leading capabilities. With Ed on board, we are even better positioned to serve our clients effectively and to pursue our ambitious goals for the continued growth and success of the practice and our Firm. I am beyond excited to welcome him to our Partnership.”

“Ed is a first-chair antitrust trial lawyer of the highest caliber. We are thrilled to welcome Ed to our team,” said John Taladay, chair of the firm’s Antitrust practice. “His high-stakes antitrust trial skills and deep experience with the DOJ make him a perfect addition to our top-tier antitrust enforcement and litigation practice.”

“I am excited to join Baker Botts and become a member of the firm’s outstanding Antitrust practice,” said Duffy. “The firm’s collaborative culture, impressive client roster, and reputation for excellence make this an incredible opportunity for me. I look forward to working alongside this talented team.”

Baker Botts also recently welcomed back former FTC official Hugh Hollman to the firm’s Antitrust practice, further expanding our suite of experienced lawyers.

Duffy earned his J.D. and B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University.
