PARTNER MOVES - CMS Grau boosts dispute resolution practice with arrival of Javier Ferrero

08 Mar 2024

Javier Ferrero's appointment to the CMS Grau team comes amid the firm's continued growth and success in the national and international arbitration market.

Javier Ferrero is a high-profile practitioner with over 15 years of experience in dispute resolution, specialising in international commercial arbitrations, investment arbitrations, and domestic arbitrations. Internationally, he has been involved in investment arbitrations before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and international commercial arbitrations under the Rules of Arbitration of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), before the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), before the Inter-American Commercial Arbitration Commission (CIAC), and before the International Chamber of Arbitration of Paris (CAIP). Additionally, he has experience in public international law and has served as an arbitrator, co-arbitrator, and Tribunal President in arbitrations before Peru's most relevant arbitration centers.

According to Luis Alberto Liñán, leading partner of the Dispute Resolution practice area at CMS Grau, Javier's inclusion in the team reflects the growing importance of national and international arbitrations in resolving complex disputes in key sectors such as mining, oil/gas, infrastructure, and energy.

“There is a need to respond with knowledge, innovation, creativity, and expertise in the field, making Javier's experience in complex arbitrations aligns perfectly with our Dispute Resolution practice.”

Javier Ferrero, CMS Grau partner, added: It is a significant challenge in my professional career. I am inspired by the firm's strategic focus on boosting the Dispute Resolution practice, and I look forward to contributing to these synergies to take the practice even further for the benefit of our clients and our team.

Commenting on his move, Juan Carlos Escudero, Managing Partner of CMS Grau, stated:  We are delighted to welcome Javier. This is a top-notch addition to the sector, promising great success. His trajectory, human qualities, and academic background are the guarantee.

Javier Ferrero's appointment follows the recent addition of María Cristina Alva, CMS Grau's Mining partner, in early February 2024. The firm boasts 24 partners and 22 areas of practice.

CMS Grau's Dispute Resolution practice specialises in litigation and arbitration. Regarding judicial litigation, it covers civil, commercial, administrative, constitutional, and criminal proceedings. Concerning national and international arbitration, the practice counsels private and public companies in arbitrations related to energy, natural resources, infrastructure, construction, among others. The interdisciplinary team of highly experienced lawyers develops preventive strategies, covering everything from their design to sponsorship throughout the entire process.

The new partner at CMS Grau boasts an outstanding career in Arbitrations. Javier Ferrero has previously served as a senior associate in the Regulatory and International Arbitration practice at Baker & Mackenzie International - Peru. Additionally, he was a part of the international arbitration team at White & Case LLP in Washington, United States. His prominent academic background includes an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from American University Washington College of Law.

Ferrero is a member of the Rising Arbitrators Initiative, the Arbitration Commission of the National Committee of ICC Peru, and serves as a member and Country Rapporteur for Peru in the Task Force of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC concerning the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.
