PARTNER MOVES - Competition leader Liza Carver returns to Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer

13 Jun 2025

Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer) welcomes Liza Carver back to the firm as a partner in its Competition Regulation and Trade (CRT) practice in Sydney, Australia.

Liza rejoins the firm following her time as Commissioner at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) — the independent statutory authority with responsibility for competition and consumer law enforcement and merger control in Australia. At the ACCC, Liza chaired the Enforcement Committee and was chair and deputy chair of the Mergers Review Committee. Liza has a deep understanding of the new compulsory merger control regime to be administered by the ACCC.

Prior to this prestigious appointment, Liza had been a partner at the firm since 2015, as well as a Council member and the CRT group’s Regional Head of Practice in Australia.

Liza joins a team of seasoned competition lawyers, led by HSF Kramer partner Linda Evans, and will work alongside the firm’s leading M&A practice, supporting the delivery of some of the most complex national and cross-border deals.

Liza returns to HSF Kramer at a time when widespread changes to Australia’s merger control regime are imminent, and competition and consumer law are playing an increasingly important role in driving productivity growth.

On Liza’s appointment, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer partner and Head of CRT in Australia, Linda Evans, said, “Liza is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most accomplished competition law and regulatory leaders and one of the most skilled lawyers in her field.

“With Australian merger reform squarely on our clients’ agendas, Liza’s immense experience, strategic thinking and insight will be invaluable to our clients.”
