PARTNER MOVES - Dentons adds arbitration specialist Peter Bekker as a partner in New York

07 Jan 2025

Dentons announces that Dr. Peter Bekker, a leading global practitioner in international arbitration, has joined the Firm’s Commercial Litigation practice as a partner, resident in the New York office. Bekker has a distinguished career helping clients navigate complex cross-border disputes, with a focus on arbitration and public international law.

Bekker has handled major arbitration matters across industries, particularly in the banking and energy sectors. He advises clients on treaty law, State responsibility, jurisdictional immunity, enforcement and expropriation, and he has represented private and sovereign parties and state-owned entities before domestic and international tribunals. In addition to his legal practice, he serves as Chair in International Law at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy within the University of Dundee (UK) and previously taught at Columbia Law School in New York. He served as head of the investment arbitration task force at his prior firm.

“Peter’s international arbitration expertise and his ability to navigate complex cross-border disputes will be a tremendous asset to our clients in the US and globally,” said Sandy Hauser, head of Dentons’ US Commercial Litigation practice. “His stellar reputation and unique perspective, informed by both his legal practice and academic work, strengthen our ability to deliver innovative solutions in high-stakes matters.”

Bekker’s choice to join Dentons follows numerous other lateral hires within Dentons US’ Litigation practice, including, for example, partners James Newland in Washington, DC, Tony Pellegrino in New York, Sulema Medrano in Chicago, Jonathan Shulan in St. Louis, and numerous others across the country. These arrivals underscore Dentons’ continued investment in building a world-class litigation and arbitration practice to meet the evolving needs of clients globally.
