PARTNER MOVES - Dentons Adds Health Care Bankruptcy Lawyer Samuel R. Maizel in Los Angeles

29 Jun 2015

Dentons announced today that Samuel R. Maizel has joined its Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Practice as a partner. Maizel focuses his practice on the health care industry. A popular speaker and prolific writer, he regularly contributes to healthcare and restructuring industry conferences and publications. He joins Dan Higgins as the second nationally known and widely respected  lawyer in the healthcare industry to join Dentons on the West Coast in recent weeks.

Maizel has represented hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, skilled nursing facilities, medical device companies, health plans, medical groups, and health care networks in cases involving out of court restructuring of debt or the acquisition of distressed assets, as well as restructuring under Chapters 11 or 9 of the Bankruptcy Code. He has also represented the official committees of unsecured creditors, individual creditors, and the buyers and sellers of distressed assets nationwide. Maizel has been retained as special counsel for bankruptcy healthcare industry entities to deal with the complicated negotiations over claims brought by federal and state regulators.  He has also served as an examiner at the request of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as a Patient Care Ombudsman, and  led his previous firm's representation of the National Association of Attorneys General (on behalf of the 46 states and six territories known as the Settling States) as parties to a master settlement agreement with the tobacco industry.

"We're very pleased to welcome Sam to the Firm," said Mike McNamara, Dentons' US Managing Partner. "He is a known and respected lawyer, and his highly-regarded experience in the health care industry is another complement to the increasing number of services our national health care practice can offer clients."

Before joining Dentons, Maizel was a partner with a national bankruptcy firm, and  was a lawyer in the US Department of Justice's Commercial Litigation Branch where he represented agencies of the federal government in bankruptcy, district and appellate courts nationwide.  He also served in the US Army Judge Advocate General's Corps including service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, for which he received the Bronze Star Medal.

He earned his BS degree from the United States Military Academy, his MA from Georgetown University and his JD from George Washington University.
