PARTNER MOVES - DLA Piper appoints new projects partner

13 Jun 2023

DLA Piper has confirmed the appointment of Tony Rutherford who will be joining DLA Piper as a Partner in the Finance, Projects & Restructuring (FP&R) practice in Melbourne.

Tony was previously a Construction, Infrastructure and Projects partner at Holding Redlich, where he advised on large and complex infrastructure transactions across a wide range of sectors. He was previously a Senior Associate at DLA Piper in our Dubai, Perth and Melbourne offices between 2008 and 2013.

“Tony’s deep sector experience and global insight will be invaluable to the firm. There’s a strong alignment with Tony’s experience and DLA Piper’s strategy, which includes a focus on the construction, infrastructure and transport sector, as well as renewable energy and energy transition related work,” said Amber Matthews, Australia Managing Partner, DLA Piper.

“Tony’s appointment provides an opportunity for the firm to bolster our front-end projects and construction capabilities across Australia. Tony’s deep expertise in social infrastructure is particularly relevant given the state and federal governments’ multi-billion dollar commitment to improving housing, health care and education facilities and access. This level of investment will also require private capital for investment from super funds and private equity houses, and with Tony on board, we will be well placed to support a wide range of industry participants,” Amber said.

“It’s testament to the firm we have such high calibre candidates returning to the firm. It demonstrates our positive culture and the vitality of a global firm,” she added.

Commenting on his appointment, Tony Rutherford said he’s delighted to be on back on board: “I’m looking forward to returning to DLA Piper as a partner. They are committed to the construction and infrastructure sector, particularly in the ESG space, and I know first-hand of their dynamic culture and forward-thinking approach to client relationships,” Tony said.
