PARTNER MOVES - Edward Coulson re-joins BLP as Competition Litigation Partner

14 Apr 2016

International law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) today (12 April 2016) announces the appointment of former BLP lawyer Edward Coulson as Partner in the Competition Litigation team in its Litigation and Corporate Risk (LCR) practice.

Edward, who trained and qualified at BLP, rising to Senior Associate, re-joins the Firm from Hausfeld, which he joined as a Partner in April 2015. He advises on complex competition litigation and regularly conducts multi-party litigation before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Competition Appeal Tribunal. His practice is focused on cartel damages actions and other competition and regulatory disputes, including in relation to procurement matters and sector regulation.

Edward spent over a decade at BLP and during this time he played a lead role acting for National Grid, helping it to pursue one of Europe’s largest cartel damages claims. The Firm won several turning-point rulings in the Gas Insulated Switchgear claim that changed the way the courts handle this kind of case and also influenced new European Union disclosure laws. The case was also recognised with a number of high-profile industry awards including Global Competition Review’s Cartel Prosecution Litigation of the Year 2015. Edward also took a leading role at BLP in a number of major regulatory investigations and resolution through ADR of complex competition disputes.

At Hausfeld, Edward was the co-lead Partner acting for the claimants in the Air Cargo claim. Alongside the National Grid work at BLP, this is one of the biggest cartel damages claims ever to arise in Europe.

Andrew Hockley, Head of Antitrust & Competition, said: “Ed is an expert competition litigator, and bringing him back to BLP is an exciting coup given his industry-leading experience and skills. Ed was involved in some of the group’s highest-profile work over the last few years and was a hugely influential and valued colleague during his time at our Firm. Recent legislative change in the UK and at EU level actively encourages resolution of competition disputes before the courts, and London with its specialist tribunal and pragmatic approach to case management is a jurisdiction of choice for resolution of competition disputes globally. Ed will help us to take our already talented competition litigation practice to the next level, driving forward the increasingly important contentious aspects of BLP’s competition and sector regulatory offering for the benefit of our clients.”

Edward Coulson added: “Coming back to BLP, the Firm where I trained and qualified, feels like I am coming home again. Having had great case experience, as well as a wider leadership and management role during the last year, I already have a great feeling about re-joining the team, helping it to continue the fantastic work that the competition litigation team has done over the last few years.”

Edward’s appointment follows recent additions into BLP’s wider LCR team, including Raza Mithani, an International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Partner, into its Dubai office and Ania Farren, a Partner in International Arbitration, into its London team.
