PARTNER MOVES - Goodwin strengthens its european private equity platform with debt finance partner Tom Roberts

09 Jul 2025

Goodwin announced that debt finance expert Tom Roberts is joining the firm’s Private Equity practice as a partner in London on 11 July 2025.

“Our European private equity platform continues to see increasing client activity and we remain focused on attracting high calibre talent to meet this demand,” said Carl Bradshaw, London-based partner in Goodwin’s Private Equity practice. “Tom’s sophisticated finance expertise complements our capabilities for supporting our sponsor and portfolio company clients in structuring, negotiating and closing complex transactions across our international platform. His technical excellence, commercial acumen, and strong client service skills come highly recommended and fully align with our strategy of building the premier destination for private equity and growth capital in the most dynamic and innovative industries. We are delighted to welcome Tom to our team.”

With over 12 years’ experience in private practice in both London and Hong Kong, Tom joins Goodwin from Kirkland & Ellis where he was a debt finance partner and specializes in leveraged finance and event-driven financings, including buyouts, bolt-on acquisitions, recapitalizations, and refinancings. He also has extensive experience in margin lending, real estate finance, and hybrid instruments such as preferred equity and convertible bonds.

Tom’s arrival is a key part of Goodwin’s continued investment in its London debt finance team following the recent additions of partners Paul Gray and Lewis Gaut. He will work with Simon Fulbrook and the rest of the debt finance team to further strengthen Goodwin’s offering across private equity, private credit, fund finance, real estate and sports opportunities.

Tom Roberts said: “Goodwin’s extensive private equity client roster, deep industry immersion and collaborative culture were key drivers in my decision to join. I’m excited to contribute to the team’s growth plans and to help clients navigate increasingly sophisticated financing solutions to enhance their returns.”

Tom is the latest addition to Goodwin’s expansive UK private equity practice, covering M&A, private investment funds, and debt finance, tax and regulatory specialties. Over the past two years, the London team has welcomed partners Ian Keefe, George Weavil, Jacqueline Eaves, Arvin Abraham, and John Anderson to the team.

With more than 350 lawyers globally focused on private equity, the Goodwin team advise clients across the full investment lifecycle — from fund formation to leveraged buyouts, growth equity investments, and exits. The firm’s London office plays a critical role in delivering integrated, cross-border solutions to private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies.

Goodwin has been ranked the number one law firm in LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) Q1 2025 league tables for global M&A by deal count and was named Law Firm of the Year (Transactions) in the 2024 Mergermarket British Private Equity Awards.
