PARTNER MOVES - Hogan Lovells adds IP litigator, former software engineer in Washington, D.C.

27 Apr 2022

Global law firm Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce the arrival of intellectual property litigator Damon Lewis as a partner in the Intellectual Property, Media, and Technology (IPMT) practice group in Washington, D.C. Lewis brings a strong technical background and experience representing clients at the federal district court, International Trade Commission (ITC), and Federal Circuit levels. He also brings a background as a software engineer at Oracle Corporation and an engineering cryptanalyst with the National Security Agency, as well as experience as a judicial clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

In welcoming Lewis to the firm, Celine Crowson, who leads the firm’s IPMT practice in the Americas, commented: ""Damon brings real-world experience to the realm of patent litigation and the ability to translate highly complex technical issues into digestible information for judges and juries. With a master’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering, he’s able to speak directly to clients and their engineers to chart a strategy based on their technology.""

Lewis, who will also work closely with the firm’s Technology & Telecoms industry sector, remarked: ""Hogan Lovells has excellent regulatory and litigation capabilities and an international reach that will provide my practice with a strong platform to grow. The firm also has top-ranked industry sector groups, particularly in technology and consumer sectors, that resonate with clients. I look forward to working with my new colleagues to help clients with complex patent and copyright litigation challenges as new technologies—and with them, new legal issues—emerge.""

Lewis joins the firm from DLA Piper, where he represented clients in patent and copyright matters in the telecommunications, microprocessors, software, televisions, power tools, electronics, e-commerce, distributed computing, communications and transportation technologies sectors. He also represented high-tech companies against competitors and non-practicing entities, arguing motions (such as Markman hearings) and numerous discovery disputes before the court.

Michele Farquhar, Washington, D.C. Office Managing Partner, remarked: ""Damon’s technical proficiency and strong litigation background make him an impressive addition to our IP practice. Just as importantly, his collegial attitude fits very well with our collaborative culture. We are delighted to welcome him to the D.C. office.""

Lewis earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan and holds M.Eng. and S.B. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in computer science and electrical engineering.
