PARTNER MOVES - Joydeep Sengupta to lead Dentons’ compliance and investigations team in Paris

11 Jun 2024

Global law firm Dentons has recruited Joydeep Sengupta as a partner to build and lead the Compliance and Investigations team within the Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice in Paris. In his new role, he will focus primarily on the financial sector.  He will be joined later by an associate.

Joydeep Sengupta advises financial institutions and corporate clients on cross-border investigations and litigation related to US and European anti-money laundering, economic sanctions, fraud, market manipulation and anticorruption laws.  He also advises on compliance and enforcement matters, including the resolution of administrative and enforcement proceedings involving regulators and prosecutors.  Triple-qualified, he is admitted to the bar in Paris, New York, and Ontario.  He speaks English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Bengali and some Italian.

He joins Dentons from Mayer Brown, where he led the investigations and white-collar defense practice in Paris.  Prior to that he worked in the New York, Paris, and Washington DC offices of Skadden Arps and in the anti-corruption department of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).  He served as a Crown Counsel and Law Clerk to the Justices of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Toronto.

He is ranked as a leading lawyer in Corporate Compliance and Investigations in France by Chambers Europe and as a Rising Star in The Legal 500.  He was also recognized among the most innovative practitioners by the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards, and for his contribution to inclusion and diversity by GIR and Chambers Europe.

“I look forward to the challenge of building up the Compliance and Investigations team to better support the needs of international banks and financial institutions,” said Joydeep Sengupta. “In the wake of Brexit, many global banks are increasing their footprint in Paris, so there is a strong market demand for quality regulatory compliance advice.”

Severine Hotellier, France Managing Partner at Dentons, commented, “Joydeep’s recruitment is an important step in our strategy for the French market to invest in talent to deepen our ability to serve the needs of clients in key industries, in this case, the financial sector.”

Judith Aron, Global Co-Chair and Europe Head of Compliance and Investigations, added, “As a member of our Global Compliance and Investigations practice, Joydeep Sengupta will strengthen our ability to meet our clients’ needs in compliance, investigations, enforcement and remediation, especially in relation to US and French anti-corruption laws. Our globally present clients, notably financial institutions, will immediately benefit from his skills and experience in advising on cross-border investigations.”
