International law firm McDermott Will & Emery welcomes back Matthew “Matt” Madden as a partner in its Litigation Practice Group in Chicago. Having started his career at McDermott as an Associate, Matt is rejoining the Firm after most recently serving as the chief of the Criminal Division at the US Attorney’s Office in Chicago, where he supervised approximately 125 assistant United States attorneys working on the office’s most complex, high-profile investigations.
“Companies and their senior executives face growing state and federal scrutiny and enforcement actions, and we continue to see increased demand for our experienced high-stakes litigators” said Steven Scholes, global head of McDermott’s Litigation Practice Group. “At the US Attorney’s Office, Matt handled some of Chicago’s most significant and high-profile cases in recent years, and his unique insight as a federal prosecutor will provide clients valuable perspective. “It is a pleasure to welcome back Matt, and with his return to McDermott, he will immediately contribute to our Firm culture and client work.”
As a first-chair trial lawyer, Matt has tried more than 25 federal criminal trials. He led and supervised investigations into nearly every type of federal criminal offense, including securities fraud, healthcare fraud, insider trading, money laundering, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act offenses, cybercrimes, bank fraud, mail and wire fraud, and terrorism.
Matt recently led a successful 11-week trial against the former senior executives of Outcome Health for a $1 billion corporate, bank and investor fraud scheme. Crain’s Chicago Business referred to this case as “one of the most high-profile and lengthy white-collar cases in Chicago history,” lauding the win as a decisive victory for Matt and the federal prosecutors.
“I started my career at McDermott and had such a positive experience that I’m excited to return to where it all began for me,” Matt said. “The Firm’s industry leading white-collar practice, which includes other exceptional former assistant United States attorneys and litigators, as well as its collaborative culture, made this a really appealing opportunity for me. I’m eager to help grow the practice and deliver favorable outcomes for clients.”
