Fried Frank announced that Michael L. Sherman has joined the firm as a partner in the Asset Management Practice in Washington, DC. Sherman joins the firm from Dechert LLP, where he served as a partner in the financial services and investment management practice since 2011.
Sherman provides counsel to investment advisers, investment funds and other financial institutions on regulatory, corporate and compliance matters. He advises his clients on issues related to investment adviser registration, compliance policies and procedures, marketing and advertising—including Global Investment Performance Standards—investment company status questions, and regulatory issues and examinations.
“Michael’s deep regulatory experience, particularly his proficiency in the Investment Advisers Act and the Investment Company Act, combined with his specialization in non-standard asset classes, will further enhance our services and benefit our global clients, who are increasingly seeking our advice in these important areas,” said Kenneth I. Rosh, head of the firm's Private Equity Funds Group. “We’re excited to have him on board as we continue to grow our Asset Management Practice and related practices throughout the firm.”
“Michael is a top-notch advisor and is known for his deep knowledge of the regulatory frameworks for governing investment funds,” added Lawrence N. Barshay, founder and head of Fried Frank's Asset Management Practice. “He will be a valuable partner and a key addition to the practice and our clients. We’re thrilled to welcome him to our team as we continue to build on the strength and prowess of our market-leading global Asset Management Practice.”
Sherman’s arrival continues the strategic growth of the firm’s incredibly busy Asset Management Practice. Within the past year, the firm welcomed partners Jason Koenig, Philip A. Heimowitz and Dorothy Mehta to the practice, and promoted Menachem Farber and Piers Harris to partner.
“We’re proud to have Michael as the latest partner to arrive at Fried Frank,” said David J. Greenwald, chairman of Fried Frank. “He’s an excellent addition to the firm and our very active Asset Management Practice.”
Led by Barshay and Rosh in the US and partner Kate Downey in Europe, Fried Frank’s global Asset Management Practice provides top-tier advice on all aspects of funds, managed accounts and other investment vehicles, including fund formation, negotiation of managed accounts and advisory agreements, structuring management companies and compensation arrangements, spinouts, seeding and stakes transactions, documentation of prime brokerage and other trading arrangements and advice regarding ongoing operations. The practice is consistently top-ranked by Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 and has been recognized as one of Law360's Practice Groups of the Year for Fund Formation three times in the past four years.
