PARTNER MOVES - New York fed veteran James Bergin joins Arnold & Porter

Arnold & Porter announced that James P. Bergin, who has held senior legal positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, including as its former acting co-general counsel and deputy general counsel, has joined the firm as a partner in the Financial Services practice. Bergin will be resident in the New York office.

Richard M. Alexander, Chairman of Arnold & Porter, said: “Jim’s experience as part of the New York Federal Reserve’s leadership team is an ideal fit for our Financial Services practice. He has significant bank regulatory experience and has worked on unique and complex issues, including many of the issues that are at the forefront of the disruption in the financial services industry today. His experience and expertise will allow us to continue to meet the growing needs of our US and foreign banking clients as they navigate the ever-changing regulatory landscape.”

As former acting co-general counsel and deputy general counsel at the New York Fed, Bergin was responsible for the legal team advising on matters relating to the implementation of monetary policy, as well as supervisory and regulatory matters related to the oversight of financial institutions. During his 18-year career at the New York Fed, he oversaw the bank’s applications function and served in other senior roles, including as Chief of Staff to President William C. Dudley.

In joining the firm, Bergin said: “I am excited to join Arnold & Porter’s outstanding Financial Services practice.  I look forward to collaborating with the team’s deep bench of attorneys to provide financial services and other clients with integrated advice on the difficult issues facing them today.”

Bergin earned his JD from Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. He received his BA from Rutgers College, Phi Beta Kappa, where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar.

Earlier in his career, Bergin was a transactional lawyer at an international law firm, where he focused on energy and infrastructure finance.
