PARTNER MOVES - Partner hire strengthens German and cross-border ENRI capabilities

05 Feb 2025

International law firm Simmons & Simmons has bolstered its Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (ENRI) practice in Germany by hiring Sergei Kabanov as a partner in its Frankfurt office.

Joining Simmons from another international law firm, Sergei brings extensive expertise across the ENRI sector to the firm, specialising in multi-jurisdictional transactions in the energy and energy transition sectors; in project and export finance, and in the infrastructure space.

In the energy and energy transition sectors, Sergei is particularly focused on advising clients on the financing of solar and wind projects, as well as electric vehicle battery gigafactories. Sergei also has strong expertise on project documents, including concession, off-take/supply, tender, and shareholder/joint venture agreements.

This is complemented with strong project and export finance experience, especially relating to Export Credit Agency (ECA) backed finance – institutions that are increasingly important for deals supporting the energy transition.

In the infrastructure sector, Sergei’s expertise includes advising on public-private partnerships (PPPs), most notably to support large multi-national clients on airport, road and hospital projects.

An English law-qualified lawyer with a strong network of international business relationships, Sergei’s hire will complement the firm’s experienced ENRI team in its Frankfurt office, enabling the firm to offer a more comprehensive service for both domestic and international clients.

Sergei joins Simmons at the time of a significant expansion of its international ENRI practice, with ENRI partner Sara Barin joining the firm’s London office in the same week.

Commenting on the hire, Jens Gölz, head of Simmons’ ENRI team in Germany, said: “Sergei is a first-rate senior lawyer with an impressive record of supporting international clients on complex, multi-jurisdictional financings. His hire as partner will further enhance the global reach of our ENRI team in Frankfurt, allowing us to advise a wider pool of clients across the energy, energy transition, infrastructure and trade, commodities and export finance sectors.”

On joining Simmons, Sergei Kabanov commented: “I’m very pleased to be joining Simmons’ respected ENRI group as partner. The firm’s global outlook and extensive network represents a perfect platform for my own practice. I’m looking forward to working closely with colleagues as an integrated team in Frankfurt and supporting the continued expansion of the international ENRI practice.”
