Global law firm Reed Smith LLP today announced that James Segroves has joined the firm’s Life Science Health Industry group as partner in the Washington, D.C. office. Segroves brings extensive experience representing clients on a wide array of complex healthcare regulatory and litigation matters, including federal False Claims Act (FCA) cases, government investigations and regulatory disputes.
In the face of a regulatory environment where uncertainty and change have become the norm, our clients’ need for legal representation and guidance has never been greater, said Reed Smith Partner Scot Hasselman, co-chair of the Life Sciences Health Industry group. James provides the blend of regulatory and litigation experience our clients require. His extensive experience handling large and highly consequential FCA cases in an array of trial and appellate courts makes him a particularly valuable resource for our clients. We are thrilled that he has joined our team in DC.
Previously a partner at Hooper, Lundy & Bookman, PC, Segroves is a seasoned litigator, representing hospitals and health systems, post-acute providers, public agencies and industry trade associations in a number of high-profile and precedent-setting cases involving matters of first impression before various appellate courts, state supreme courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. He also has advised clients on key issues under the FCA, the Federal Arbitration Act and the Administrative Procedure Act.
I was drawn to Reed Smith because of the strength of its health industry practice and its presence nationwide, Segroves said. The unsettled state of FCA case law means that a ruling in a single FCA case can impact an unrelated FCA case anywhere, which makes Reed Smith’s nationwide footprint indispensable to clients – especially with FCA litigation on the rise in health care and other industries.
Segroves routinely advises clients on pending federal legislative proposals and rulemaking on various topics, including Medicare, Medicaid, the FCA and arbitration. Currently, he serves on the Legal Committee of the American Health Care Association.
James is a highly regarded member of the DC-area legal community, and respected across the health care industry, said A. Scott Bolden, managing partner of the Reed Smith DC office. His experience in and out of the courtroom makes him an incredible asset to our team. We’re delighted to welcome him to the firm.
Segroves earned his JD from the Duke University School of Law and a B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Tennessee.
