02 May 2025

International law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has strengthened its Real Estate and Projects practice with the addition of Richard Hughes, who joins the firm in London.

Richard is an international infrastructure, rail and bus specialist, experienced in the energy transition and transportation sectors. His clients include financiers, rail and bus owning groups and operators, facilities management companies and governments, for whom he advises on a range of issues including facilities management arrangements, rolling stock and bus procurement and financing, rail and bus operating contracts and third-party investment. Richard has notable experience on energy transition, including hydrogen and battery power, in rail, bus and facilities management.

We're really pleased to be welcoming Richard to our partnership, said Tammy Samuel, Head of Rail, Stephenson Harwood. He returns to the firm having worked with us previously, so we know first-hand what an outstanding lawyer he is – combining legal excellence with a deep understanding of the industries in which our clients operate, and a determination to harness the qualities across our firm to build meaningful and lasting relationships with clients.

We're always keen to add more senior talent to our ranks, particularly where their specialisms align with our areas of strategic focus, said Rebecca Carter, head of Stephenson Harwood's Real Estate and Projects practice. Richard's experience in transportation and trade, and in energy transition, will prove invaluable in further developing our client offering in these areas. The breadth of his experience will also be key in bolstering our international Projects practice.

The Stephenson Harwood Real Estate and Projects team is renowned for its strategic thinking, commercial nous and ability to add meaningful value and insight to even the most complex deals. The team has a long history of working on major transport and infrastructure projects around the world, supporting clients from Governments and procuring authorities, sponsors and investors, to debt and equity funders, contractors, and other stakeholders.
