Ropes & Gray announced that Richard Perks has joined the firm as a partner in the private equity practice, based in Hong Kong. Richard is a leading mergers & acquisitions lawyer with significant experience representing clients across Asia in both the acquisition and financing of their transactions.

With over 20 years advising clients on public and private acquisitions, joint ventures, and financings in Asia and around the world, Richard brings expertise in multiple industries, including life sciences, financial services, manufacturing, industrials, and technology. He has led numerous landmark international deals, including Geely’s $9 billion acquisition of a 9.69% stake in Daimler, the largest-ever Chinese investment in Germany.

“Richard has advised on many of Asia’s most significant and highest profile transactions in recent years,” said Julie Jones, chair of Ropes & Gray. “Our focus on serving private market investors and participants continues to grow, and Richard’s experience makes him an invaluable asset for clients who are pursuing opportunities in Japan and across Asia.”

While based in Hong Kong, Richard will also have a regular presence in Tokyo as a key member of the team supporting Japanese clients.

“Asia is the fastest-growing, most dynamic region in the world,” said Asia regional managing partner Tsuyoshi Imai. “Richard’s experience advising notable private equity funds and banks will support the firm’s goals as we expand our market presence across the region. His keen understanding of the Japanese market and his fluency in Japanese are also a huge asset. In addition, he deepens the capabilities of our preeminent Asia life sciences practice.”

“Richard’s arrival demonstrates that the firm’s commitment to servicing Asia clients out of Hong Kong has never been stronger,” added Vincent Ip, Hong Kong office managing partner. “This is a critical hub for private investment across the region, and Richard greatly enhances our pan-Asia capabilities.”

Ropes & Gray has been in Asia since 2007, when it opened its first office in Tokyo. The firm’s private equity practice receives top rankings from Chambers Asia-Pacific, The Legal 500, and U.S. News. Its lawyers are renowned for handling complex and high-profile private equity transactions worldwide.
