PARTNER MOVES - Sidley expands global investments offering by adding Ed Gander and renowned London private funds team

13 May 2025

Sidley is pleased to announce that Ed Gander has joined Sidley’s Investment Funds Practice Group in London. He joins Sidley from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where Mr. Gander was head of their London Private Funds Group and co-head of their Global Private Funds Group. Mr. Gander will become head of Sidley’s London Private Funds Group, and will be joined in the coming weeks by Stephen Fox and Peter Boulle, also partners in the Private Funds Group at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

Mr. Gander is a well-known international private funds leader with more than 25 years of fundraising experience. His broad cross-border practice focuses on advising a wide range of leading private equity fund sponsors from structuring to operating complex global funds. Ed has a proven track record of serving global fund managers across private equity, infrastructure, real estate, credit, and secondaries funds.

When Mr. Fox and Mr. Boulle join, they will become part of a six-partner cross-practice London-based funds team (which includes Oren Gertner, Blake Fillion, and EU/UK financial services and regulatory funds head Leonard Ng) with a highly versatile practice across a wide range of asset classes, including advising on the structuring, marketing, and negotiation of funds as well as the commercial and EU/UK regulatory issues arising from the ongoing day-to-day operation of such funds.

“I am excited to welcome market-leader Ed Gander to the firm as we continue to build out our elite Private Funds team in our London office, taking our premier platform for our private clients to a new scale; the experience and deep sector knowledge of the team are highly synergetic with our recent arrivals as we look to unlock new opportunities for our clients and prospective clients to build their business,” said Tom Thesing, managing partner of Sidley’s London office and a member of the Management and Executive Committees. “Our firm works with more than 200 of the leading global sponsors and by adding Ed, Steve, and Peter, we are continuing our transformational growth in London to service our clients legal needs.”

“Ed, Steve, and Peter have built an exceptional private funds practice and have strong relationships with leading sponsors who will benefit from onboarding onto our market-leading cross-border platform,” said Liz Fries, global leader of the firm’s Investment Funds practice, a member of Sidley’s Executive Committee, and managing partner of the Boston office. “Adding this team underlines our commitment to growing our Investment Funds practice with elite talent.”

Sidley has made a number of significant additions in London over the last 12 months with a group of eight Leveraged Finance partners led by Jay Sadanandan and Sam Hamilton, including Capital Markets partners Scott Colwell and Patrick Kwak, as well as Global Finance partners Fergus O’Domhnaill, Joe Kimberling, Ben Wright, and Tania Bedi. They were recently joined by Global Capital Markets partner David Stewart. The office also added partners Ben Thompson (Infrastructure Finance) and Clive Gringras (AI and Tech).

Sidley has also made significant additions to its funds practice in the U.S. over the past 12 months, with Shane Goudey, leading the firm’s Venture Capital fund formation practice from Palo Alto, and Mathew Eapen in Boston, focusing on private investment funds, particularly venture capital, growth equity, and technology- and healthcare-focused funds.

Sidley has a premier, global practice in structuring and advising asset management businesses. The Investment Funds practice group serves virtually every type of investment fund and asset manager, as well as many other market participants. The group has approximately 130 corporate, securities, and derivatives lawyers dedicated to investment funds, investment management, and derivatives work worldwide, and works closely with our sophisticated tax, benefits, regulatory, enforcement, and other related practices.
