PARTNER MOVES - TLT bolsters Birmingham with raft of new senior hires

06 Dec 2023

TLT has boosted its offering in Birmingham with new senior hires, supporting its national growth and providing a full-service commercial offering to clients across all its seven key sectors

TLT has recruited three partners joining its corporate team; commercial dispute resolution team; and financial services disputes and investigations team, with more to follow

The new appointments will enhance TLT’s corporate and litigation practices, with a particular emphasis on private equity, venture capital and wider financial services

Award-winning national law firm TLT has welcomed a number of new hires to its new office in the heart of Birmingham city centre, further strengthening its position as one of the fastest growing law firms in the country and enhancing the service offered to clients.

TLT recently announced the opening of its Birmingham-based office, located on Chamberlain Square - the firm’s seventh across the UK joining those in Manchester, Belfast, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol. The location is set to widen TLT’s national footprint by driving regional growth in the Midlands with a full-service commercial offering for clients.

TLT’s Birmingham office has an immediate presence of expert senior lawyers working in corporate, real estate, litigation, employment and financial services disputes and investigations, soon to be followed by wider advisory services in other practice areas.

The growth of the firm’s corporate, litigation and financial services disputes and investigations practices are being supported by the recruitment of three leading lawyers.

Mark Elder has joined as head of location in Birmingham and partner in TLT’s commercial dispute resolution team from Shoosmiths. Recognised as one of the most trusted commercial litigators in the UK, Mark joins with a team to support the national expansion of TLT’s commercial dispute team, whilst providing expert legal advice on a wide variety of complex commercial dispute matters.

Mathew Harvey has joined as corporate partner from Trowers & Hamlins. Mathew’s appointment adds to the expansion of the national corporate practice in recent years, which has included partner hires in Edinburgh and London in the last year. His experience in establishing corporate and support services for corporates, investors and owners, will be key in supporting the development of the firm’s corporate practice both nationally and regionally, with further appointments to follow.

The firm has appointed financial services disputes specialist, Roger Potgieter, who has joined TLT with a team from Shoosmiths. A well-known and respected litigator, Roger has become a go-to advisor to banks, leasing companies and motor and asset finance lenders on complex issues including fraud, title disputes, misrepresentation claims and contentious recoveries. Roger’s appointment forms part of TLT’s strategic growth plans to expand its national practice in motor and asset finance and strengthen the level of support TLT offers to financial services firms.

John Wood, managing partner at TLT said: “Birmingham is one of the fastest growing business and professional services centres in the UK and an important city in which to establish a presence. However, it has been some time since this legal market has welcomed a newcomer with TLT’s energy, ambition and focus – it is the perfect time for us to be opening here, bringing true innovation and a fresh offering to both talent and businesses.

“Ten years ago, we opened our office in Manchester from a standing start to over 100 lawyers in 2023. We anticipate our growth in Birmingham to be much quicker. The opening of our office offers local legal talent the opportunity to work at one of the fastest growing and most progressive law firms in the country, boasting some of the best lawyers in the UK, where people are valued, recognised and rewarded, whilst maintaining the highest standard of service for clients. We already have close to 30 TLT colleagues set up in our Birmingham office and have received significant interest from outside talent, who want to join us for something a little different.

“Corporate and litigation are major growth areas for us – over the past twelve months we have made a number of senior hires to the corporate team in London and Edinburgh and have worked on some of the most high-profile cases in the UK. We have continued to find plenty of opportunity in the UK corporate mid-market and have a robust pipeline and a fantastic client base to work with. With Birmingham boasting a strong private equity and venture capital market, our new Midlands-based office will give us greater scope to build on this strength.”

The opening of the office in Birmingham follows a sustained period of growth, which has seen the firm report record financial success in the last couple of years. With revenue exceeding £157m up from £144m in 2021/2022 following 30% growth in the prior year. The last twelve months have also seen the firm expand its offering across all its sectors and services, including recruiting eight new partners.

Whilst the space will serve as a hub for employees working in Birmingham, the office opening is an important step in helping the firm achieve its progressive strategy of offering a flexible working environment as part of TLT World – TLT’s flexible approach to working launched in summer 2021.
