24 Jun 2025

King & Spalding announced that Matt Hanson has rejoined the firm as a partner in its Special Matters and Government Investigations practice group. He is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.

Hanson returns to the firm after nearly three years at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legislative Affairs, where he most recently served as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General. While in this role, Hanson handled numerous legislative matters in areas including national security and intelligence, technology, financial services, and healthcare and drug policy.

Prior to his government service, Hanson was a partner at King & Spalding representing companies and individuals on securities enforcement and regulation matters before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, DOJ, and other financial regulators, as well as in high-stakes congressional investigations before the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

“Matt is an immense talent – smart, thoughtful and collaborative with valued judgment – and we are excited to welcome him back to the firm,” said Mark Jensen, co-leader of the firm’s Special Matters and Government Investigations practice group. “Matt’s leadership, deep experience, credibility with public officials and senior advisors on both sides of the aisle and versatility across a range of strategic areas, including emerging technology, financial services and national security, enhances our ability to provide strategic counsel to all types of clients.”

Hanson earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia and his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“I am thrilled to return to King & Spalding, which offers a world-class platform to continue building my practice,” said Hanson. “The firm continues to be a leader for securities enforcement and congressional investigations work and is at the forefront in fintech, AI and national security – all areas where I have developed significant experience that I look forward to putting to use to serve our clients.”
