Squire Patton Boggs has advised Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and its owner Milan Mandaric on the sale of the club to Hafiz Mammadov. Mr. Mammadov, a former member of The Azerbaijan Football Association and current owner of FC Baku and RC Lens, is founder and Chairman of the Baghlan Group, the Azerbaijani construction and oil and gas company. The transaction is still subject to ratification by the Football League.
Squire Patton Boggs’ Corporate partner David Hull in London advised long-standing client Mr. Mandaric on the sale, and on his previous purchase of Sheffield Wednesday in December 2010 and prior to that on the sale by Mr. Mandaric of Leicester City FC in August 2010.
The sale of Sheffield Wednesday is the latest in a series of football club transactions led by David Hull. In July 2013 he acted for Shahid Khan in his purchase of Fulham FC. Other recent work has included advising Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister of Thailand, on the recommended takeover of Manchester City, and also that club’s later sale to the Abu Dhabi royal family; representing Aston Villa plc on its recommended takeover by RAL, backed by Randy Lerner; and advising Venkateshwara Hatcheries plc on the acquisition of Blackburn Rovers in 2010.
