WFW advises RWE on entry into Italian electricity trading market

International law firm Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW“) successfully advised RWE SUPPLY & TRADING GMBH, a subsidiary of RWE Group (“RWE”), one of the leading energy production and generation companies in Germany, on its admission to the Italian electricity market managed by Gestore dei Mercati Energetici S.p.A. (“GME” – also known as Italian Power Exchange, IPEX).

The advice also included assistance on the finalisation and execution of dispatching contracts with Italian electricity transmission system operator Terna S.p.A. and on the requirements for qualifying as a trader required by GME.

RWE is Germany’s second largest electricity and a major international players in the energy upstream and trading and supply markets, most notably in the renewable energy sector. Through its various subsidiaries, RWE supplies electricity and gas to more than 120 million customers in Europe and North America.

Terna S.p.A. manages the Italian transmission grid and is responsible for national power transmission and dispatch.

The WFW team advising on the refinancing was led by WFW partner and Italy Head Eugenio Tranchino, assisted by counsel Luca Sfrecola and associate Cristina Betti. Counsel Giuseppe Franch advised on tax matters.
