2020 marks the 100th anniversary of Madge Easton Anderson becoming the first female solicitor in the UK.
Since then the number of women entering law has risen a pace; now more than 50% of new solicitors entering the profession are women. However, at partnership level, there are still only a few large firms that have over 25% women partners. Why is there is still an under representation of women at partnership level and what changes are required to level up the top of the legal profession? Firms are taking important steps to improve gender equality but how long will it take to effect real change and what initiatives will have the most impact?
To understand the dynamics of gender diversity across UK law, Legal Monitor/JMAN Group have undertaken a detailed, data driven analysis of more than 10,000 UK partners working for c100 of the UK/US largest law firms. The analysis looks at the impact of key drivers on gender diversity change in a firm, including:
- Recruitment – are women hired at the same rate as men?
- Promotion – do women advance as quickly as men?
- Attrition – do more women leave partnerships than men?
- Retirement – what impact will this have on gender diversity?
Structural differences in geographic footprint, size of partnerships and focus of practice area can impact firm culture, hiring and promotion prospects; we explore whether over the years this has created differences at the micro level in the gender balance of partnerships.
The data model underpinning the report aggregates data by firm type, firm size, practice area and location, providing a unique insight into the firms that have achieved defined partnership gender targets and the factors that influence success in achieving a more gender balanced firm. Attendance at this briefing will provide you with metrics that will help you understand the best ways of achieving a more gender diverse partnership at your firm.
With clients asking law firms to improve their gender balance, and firms suffering a talent drain through the loss of talented senior female solicitors, gender diversity is clearly a board level issue. This briefing is aimed at law firm leaders, including managing partners, HR Directors and partners with a specific gender diversity remit within their firm.
All attendees will be provided with a free summary of the Law Firm Gender Diversity Report 2020, a blueprint for measuring and benchmarking gender diversity in your law firm.
